Catch up day 17- Medicaid at 50: The Katie Beckett Provision

When you see something wrong in the world and people tell you, “write a letter to your Congressman” it can feel like they are blowing you off. That wasn’t the case for Katie Beckett and her family.

George H. W. Bush heard about a 3 year old named Katie Beckett from an Iowa Congressman. Beckett contracted a viral disease that left her paralyzed. She was unable to return home and maintain her Medicaid coverage. Her family acted on her behalf and her cause was taken up by President Reagan. Because of her, over 500,000 children are able to return home and maintain their Medicaid coverage.

Sadly, Beckett passed away a few years ago. The New York Times wrote a beautiful article about her life. I highly recommend reading it.
