Day 28 – Medicaid at 50: State Highlight: Delaware

Apologies, all – have also gotten behind on the holiday weekend. But in our hearts, enthusiasm for Medicaid never takes a vacation.

Basics: Delaware Medicaid covers 238,939 lives

Delaware Medicaid has been ahead of the curve when it comes to health IT. They rolled out statewide e-prescribing in Medicaid in 2009, before the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) – AKA the stimulus bill – catalyzed nationwide uptake of electronic health records. Electronic prescribing is endorsed by the IOM and CMS, and is considered a way to improve quality and reduce errors. Some advantages of e-prescribing are that writing is legible, there can be safety parameters on the dosing of the medication, and there can be safety checks for interactions with other meds that the patient is on, or any allergies that are noted. From a patient perspective, it can be convenient to have your prescriptions sent directly from your doctor to your pharmacy!
