Salient has gotten really salient

I’ve noticed that in the last few weeks the word “salient” has gotten more popular in news headlines, on the twitters, and in my research articles. Google trends backs me up here:

Salient's Saliency  In case you need a refresher, salient means most noticeable or important. In a sentence, “it succinctly covered all the salient points of the case.” (Thanks Google dictionary.)

It seems to have replaced prominence. One could say salient has more salience than prominence.

Words, man. They are interesting.
